The Second Dordrecht Period: 1656-1661

Drost (1633-1659) would arrive in Venice only a few years later, and adopt this mode wholesale.29 Even so, Van Hoogstraten did not imitate the rough facture of the tenebrosi, but maintained his own penchant for smoothly rounded forms and surfaces. A largely similar style characterizes his depiction of Heraclitus [26], which can also be dated shortly after his return from Italy. The same applies to the more recently rediscovered canvas of the Virgin with child [29], likely from a little later, around 1660. Van Hoogstraten went on to apply a more imposing figure scale in his portraits from this period as well, as can be seen in his Portrait of an unknown man of 1660, and in the 1661 portraits of the Dordrecht wine merchant Jacob Ouzeel [27] and his wife Maaiken Stoop [28]. ...

... embrandt around 1656. Van Dijck made a drawn copy of an interim state of Rembrandt’s Apostle Paul in Washington, and experimented with open brush work in a number of paintings around this time.31 In turn, Maes’s Apostle Thomas in Kassel imitates the brushwork in Rembrandt’s Jacob blessing Manasseh and Ephraim of 1656 in the same collection. For Van Hoogstraten, we also have a concrete reference to his study of a painting that could have been in the process of being painted in Rembrandt’s studio around 1657, in his drawing after Rembrandt’s Jupiter and Mercury visiting Philemon and Baucis in Washington, dated to around 1658, making this scenario quite tangible. ...

Van Hoogstraten Illustrating His Own Books

... de van heilige gezangen op de toonen Salomons, en stemmen der heiligen. (‘Golden shepherd’s flute, resounding like holy songs to the tune of Solomon and voices of the saints’). There are no illustrations. The manuscript was certainly in progress before Samuel left for Vienna and his brother François van Hoogstraten (I) (1632-1696) must have seen it through to publication; he contributed a laudatory verse and two poems dated 1650 and 1652.70 After the death of their father Dirck in 1640, François had been apprenticed to Andriesz to learn the trade of printing and bookselling.71 In 1657, when Van Hoogstraten was back in Dordrecht, Andriesz published Samuel's conduct book, Den eerlyken jongeling.72 The title page and one of the two internal illustrations, while unsigned, are attributable to Samuel, while the other illustration, depicting Fortuna, is signed with Dirck's monogram, 'DvH' [30][31]. François, after becoming an independent publisher himself, used several of Dirck's copperplates in his own publications. Thus, he must also have kept the Fortuna and passed it along to Andriesz.73In 1652-1653, Van Hoogstraten traveled from Vienna through the German lands on a trip to Italy. In the Inleyding, he writes that while spending a few days in Frankfurt am Main in June 1652, he was 'well-received by Mr. Merian' who 'urged [him] to advance steadily'.74 This would have been Matthäus Merian (II) (1621-1687), the Swiss engraver and portrait painter whose family included several prolific printmakers. At the time of Van Hoogstraten's visit, Matthäus and his younger brother Caspar were busy running the publishing house established by their father, Matthäus the Elder. In Regensburg in 1653, Samuel must also have met another German printmaker, Jakob von Sandrart (1630-1708); shortly thereafter, Von Sandrart engraved a portrait of the Moravian cleric Alphons Steinmoos with a dedication written by Van Hoogstraten.75 These experiences may well have stimulated Van Hoogstraten's interest in prints and their uses....

Method: Working from a Core Group

... eflect study and work under Rembrandt.In turn, various scholars, including Holm Bevers for instance, have brought such criteria to bear on Sumowski’s attributions, in deciding against Van Hoogstraten’s authorship.7 This is only a small percentage however, compared to the larger number of problematic attributions of paintings: the present study questions only four further sheets.8 Of great significance for the critical review of the attributions by various scholars was the participation of a large panel of scholars in an Expert Meeting: Rob Fucci, Ilona van Tuinen, William Robinson, Yvonne Bleyerveld, Leonore van Sloten, Céçile Tainturier, Olenka Horbatsch, Marleen Ram, Celeste Brusati, Susan Anderson and Maud van Suylen. This does not mean that all of these scholars endorse all of the attributions put forward in this study. In cases of disagreement, we have sought to represent the divergent opinions in notes accompanying the individual records in this catalogue. ...

Van Hoogstraten and Johan van Beverwijck

... ath; Van Beverwijck discussed it in several publications.29An image that must have been of particular interest to the young artist depicts a camera obscura [9]. Van Beverwijck uses it to explain the workings of the eye. From the text it is clear that he experimented with such a device in the tower room of his house in the Wijnstraat in Dordrecht, where Van Hoogstraten may well have visited.30 Thus, the young artist was already introduced to the scientific study of optical effects before he became an apprentice to Rembrandt.31 Later on, while working at the court in Vienna, he saw the camera obscura with the Jesuits, as described in the Inleyding; he also notes seeing such devices in London. Although this passage does not mention Van Beverwijck, it is noteworthy that he recommends 'that seeing this reflection in the dark will much enlighten the vision of young painters; for apart from acquiring knowledge of nature through it, one can also see here, in an overall or general way, the characteristics a truly natural painting ought to have'.32 In Van Hoogstraten's later work, perspectival illusion, possibly achieved with the help of optical instruments, plays a key role.33Some of the copper plates from the combined edition, including the one depicting scurvy-grass, were later used in editions published in Utrecht (1651) and Amsterdam (1652).34 In 1650 Jacob Braat (d. 1664) published an edition of the second part of Schat der ongesontheyt in Dordrecht. He must not have had access to Van Hoogstraten's plates, since he replaced them with copies; they are almost indistinguishable from the originals, and only one is in mirror image. Johan van Beverwijck had died in Dordrecht in January 1647, and Braat's edition includes not only Van Beverwijck's portrait, etched by Salomon Savery, but also eulogies honoring Van Beverwijck as a physician and scholar. Among them is a poem by Samuel van Hoogstraten.35 ...

Distinguishing the Sketches: Before and After 1649

In this study, it has been possible to make such a connection for some of these works, but for others the comparison makes it clear that they should be placed earlier, to around 1648/49.24...

But instead of the provocative grin there, Van Hoogstraten renders a naturalistic and disarming expression, yielding one of the most persuasive renderings of emotion in his entire oeuvre, and generally one of the more memorable images of the age. ...

... n Hoogstraten was still his pupil (or “disciple”) around 1644/45, Rembrandt made his drawing of the Montelbaanstoren, which stood not far from his house. This may have prompted his disciple to make a drawing of a tower as well, this time that of the Westerkerk, viewed from the north: at a far distance, as he advised in his treatise [63].28 This sheet has also been given to Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693)on account of the added inscription, however the careful handling, rich buildup, and the controlled and smooth contours fit in with Van Hoogstraten’s work around 1648, when he depicted himself making exactly such a drawing, in a large painting in St. Petersburg [64].29 He would later de...

... his activity in the late 1640s, not long after his departure from the studio.30 Another equally evocative study sheets employs looser, quickly dragged lines to render a bearded man in a fur hat, and a hatted man in lost profile [66]. None of the remaining known examples reflect the later development of Van Hoogstraten’s drawing hand however, and he appears to have no longer seen potential in such spontaneous observations of human behaviour ‘nae ‘t leven’ (from life), as part of his study of the visible world.31 ...

Triumph in Vienna

In 1654, for instance, he wrote a play on the occasion of the wedding of Matthijs Pompe van Slingeland (1621-1679), who had been appointed bailiff of the province of South Holland the year before. In his Introduction, Van Hoogstraten noted that it was a great honour for a painter to be invited to the wedding banquet of the most distinguished people of his town.29 As a result of this printed tribute, Van Hoogstraten was still present in his absence and people did not forget him. ...

The Corpus of Tapestries in the Netherlands: composition and content

... in the Regentenzaal of the Bartholomeus Gasthuis in Utrecht (cat. 183). All the walls here are completely covered with the so-called Landscape verdures with animals, featuring the regents’ coats of arms. This series was made in 1642-1648 in Maximiliaan van der Gucht’s workshop in Delft. Remarkably, there are several other interiors featuring series of landscapes with animals in situ made by the same Delft workshop. These include the town hall of Nijmegen (1665-1666) (cat. 161), Slot Zuylen (circa 1670) (cat. 167) and Huis Gunterstein near Breukelen (circa 1681-1689) (cat. 49).Gouda’s town hall also includes a room entirely lined with landscape verdure tapestries featuring animals. These were created in 1642 in the town itself, by David Rufelaer’s workshop (cat. 115)....

In the late seventeenth century, the series Park Views with Children’s Games and the Spaen coat of arms, which was likely woven in Antwerp in around 1661-1691, was transferred from another castle belonging to the Spaen family and installed at Kasteel Biljoen near Velp (cat. 193). Kasteel Biljoen also contains a room, at least since 1872, lined with five Landscape verdures with Animals (cat. 192), of which four were probably produced by Maximiliaan van der Gucht in Delft in around 1650-1675, and the fifth by Alexander Baert in Amsterdam in circa 1710.In the case of several other tapestry interiors that have long been present in their current locations in castles, it is not entirely clear when they were acquired. These include a series of Landscape verdures with birds, woven in Aubusson in the last quarter of the seventeenth century at Kasteel Keppel in Laag-Keppel (cat. 138), and a series of Forest Landscapes with children playing, produced in the Northern Netherlands in the first half of the eighteenth century at Kasteel Endegeest in Oegstgeest (cat. 164)....

... 34). There are two cushion covers in the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Amsterdam featuring the coat of arms of Amsterdam, the initials of the Oude Kerk and the date 1688 (cat. 37). Alexander Baert made the cushions for the Waalse Kerk (Walloon Church) in Amsterdam featuring the Amsterdam city coat of arms, the monogram of the Waalse Kerk and the date 1714 (cat. 38). There are also two exceptionally fine sofas with tapestry upholstery made in Aubusson from 1741 in the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam (cat. 35). They are now used as chatanim sofas, and one of the two is the only known example that bears the weaver Dessarteaux’s signature....

In addition, Paleis Het Loo owns a Landscape with poodle attacking a bittern with an animal scene after Jean-Baptiste Oudry, made in Aubusson circa 1750-1775 (cat. 43)....

In 2016, the museum was relocated to Zutphen....

These are Millefleurs with two figures and animals, probably manufactured in the Southern Netherlands around 1650-1660 (cat. 24) and two pieces produced in Aubusson in France, a Landscape verdure with two cranes from circa 1680-1700 (cat. 26) and a Landscape verdure with two women catching birds from around 1675-1725 (cat. 25). Also woven in Aubusson around 1750-1760 is a Cushion with Orpheus and the animals, that originally served as upholstery for a chair and which was purchased by the museum (cat. 29).The Dordrechts Museum/Huis van Gijn acquired six tapestries from a private collection. The oldest of these is a large fragment of a tapestry from a series of the Story of Julius Caesar after a design attributed to Pieter Coecke van Aelst and produced in Brussels around 1550 (cat. 98), and a tapestry depicting Jupiter and Juno, presumably also woven in Brussels around 1550-1560 (cat. 99). Dating from the seventeenth century are The judgement of Paris, possibly manufactured in Oudenaarde, circa 1670-1700 (cat. 103), Wild boar hunt and two coats of arms, circa 1600-1625, woven in Oudenaarde or Aubusson (cat. 100), as well as a Landscape verdure with falcon and dove, in the second half of the seventeenth century (cat. 101).In 1953, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht acquired a tapestry of The Capture of Rome from a series depicting the Story of Alarik, manufactured in Aubusson in the second half of the seventeenth century (cat. 186). In addition, this museum boasts various cushions with coats of arms, thanks to a long-term loan. First of all, these are four cushions with the coat of arms of Rotterdam, of which three were probably woven by the Delft workshop of the Van der Gucht family in 1679, 1689 and around 1675-1700 and a fourth manufactured in 1740 by the Weduwe Alexander Baert en zonen in Amsterdam (cat. 187). There is also a Cushion with the Arms of Holland in the Hollandse Tuin, manufactured in the Northern Netherlands in around 1680-1700 (cat. 188), a Cushion cover with symbolic representation of the College of the Groote Visscherij, possibly woven in Delft around 1650-1740 (cat. 185) and a Cushion with the Arms of the Board of the Opperdijkgraaf and the local officials of the water board of Putten, or the Ring of Putten, manufactured in the Northern Netherlands, circa 1730-1750 (cat. 189)....

The collection includes a Landscape verdure with mythological scene, probably manufactured in Oudenaarde around 1700-1750 (cat. 143), a Landscape verdure with bird, from Aubusson or Felletin, from circa 1700-1750 (cat. 142), a Tapestry strip with vases with flowers and fruit and angel heads (probably an antependium), presumably made in Germany around 1600 (cat. 141), a Fragment of a vertical tapestry border, from the Southern Netherlands, circa 1550-1600 (cat. 140) and a Four-piece screen of tapestry fragments with landscapes, animals and rural scenes, believed to have been woven in Brussels around 1550-1575 (cat. 139)....

21. Ameublement met militaire voorstellingen en bloeiende planten in landschappen

In de betaling hiervan op 27 juni 1802 is namelijk evenals bij cat. 21-a-h (waar het ameublement tot 1927 alleen uit bestond) sprake van zes armstoelen en twee canapés met de opvallende combinatie van Casanova's militaire ontwerpen op de ruggen met voorstellingen met bloemen op de zittingen die worden omgeven door randen met jasmijn.16Omstreeks 1804 werden er nog twee ameublementen met Casanova's militaire voorstellingen geleverd voor de aankleding van de paleizen van keizer Napoleon te Fontainebleau en Schönberg.17 Ook werden de meubelbekledingen met militaire ontwerpen tussen 1805 en 1814 onder leiding van Antoine-Michel Huet te Beauvais voor andere keizerlijke paleizen en voor familieleden van Napoleon uitgevoerd.18 Hierbij werden Casanova's militaire voorstellingen omlijst door ornamentranden met geometrische patronen, krulwerk en vlechtmotieven.19Meubels met bekledingen van achttiende-eeuwse uitvoeringen van Casanova's voorstellingen bevinden zich in verspreide internationale particuliere collecties, met name in Frankrijk, Engeland, Duitsland en Polen, maar vooral in de Verenigde Staten.20 In verschillende Franse paleizen, zoals het paleis van Compiègne, het Elysée en het paleis van Fontainebleau, bevinden zich Empire versies van Casanova's 'meuble militaire'.21 Tijdens het Second Empire, rond 1860, zouden Casanova's militaire voorstellingen opnieuw worden uitgevoerd in Beauvais, waar de ateliers toen werden geleid door Pierre-Adolphe Badin.22 Hierbij werden deze achttiende-eeuwse ontwerpen door de kunstenaars Pierre-Adrien Chabal-Dussurgey (1819-1902) en Jules Diéterle (1811-1889), respectievelijk gespecialiseerd in decoratieve motieven en bloemen, aangepast aan de 'goût du jour'.23 Tenslotte vonden er in 1910 in Beauvais nog heruitvoeringen plaats van de ontwerpen van Casanova.24...

... stoffeerde onderdelen de zittingen los in het frame zijn aangebracht en de ruggen en armleggers met enkele pinschroeven op de plaats worden gehouden, zodat er, bijvoorbeeld voor de zomer of de winter, eenvoudig gewisseld kon worden met een andere reeks bekledingen. Er is hierbij gebleken dat de ruggen, zittingen en armleggers van cat. 21-a-i, bijvoorbeeld na inspecties of verplaatsingen van het ameublement, niet altijd in dezelfde combinaties weer bij elkaar zijn geplaatst. Daarom wordt hier de combinatie van ruggen en zittingen aangehouden zoals in de nummering door het RCE, en de daarbij horende foto's, is aangegeven.30...

... fouet à la main' op cat. 21-e).31 Drie van de in 1787 genoemde stoelruggen komen echter niet voor bij cat. 21-a-j, evenmin als de daar genoemde voorstellingen van de zittingen.32Hoewel de rugvoorstellingen van de twee armstoelen cat. 21-b en cat. 21-f niet voorkomen in de lijst met de in 1787 genoemde militaire voorstellingen door Casanova, bezit het Mobilier National te Parijs wel van beide voorstellingen de kartons van Casanova, die in de documentatie erover respectievelijk De Tamboer en de Vaandeldrager ('Tambour et porte-drapeau') en De Vaandeldrager ('Le Porte-etendard') getiteld zijn.33De voorstelling op de rug van cat. 21-b is eveneens toegepast op de rug van een armstoel die onderdeel was van een ameublement met militaire voorstellingen naar Casanova uit de voormalige verzamelingen Cronier en Goulden.34In de voorstelling op de stoelrug van cat. 21-d zijn de huzaren van Casanova's oorspronkelijke ontwerp van 'Le hussard le sabre à la main' veranderd in kozakken.35 Cat. 21-d is tevens verwant aan een schilderij van Casanova in het Louvre te Parijs 'Un cuirassier au galop', maar daar is de voorstelling in spiegelbeeld en in diverse details verschillend.36De tapisserie van de zes armstoelen maakt deel uit van het oorspronkelijke ameublement (geveild 1890). Tussen 1894 en 1927 werden de bekledingen op andere houten frames aangebracht.37Conditie:De bekleding in tapisserie is verschoten. De ruggen, zittingen en armleggers hebben losse kussens 'à chassis'; de huidige combinaties van rug en zitting wijken af van de situatie in 1927 (één uitgezonderd). De rozenboord rond de zitting van cat. 21-b (met rode stokroos) is geweven op een katoenen ketting....

... an met de lastdieren, de geit en het schaap en De doorwaadplaats.38 De twee militaire voorstellingen op de ruggen van cat. 21-g-h zijn anders dan bekende achttiende-eeuwse uitvoeringen, zoals van een canapé in de Wallace Collection in Londen.39De voorstelling op de rug van cat. 21-g is eveneens toegepast op de rug van een canapé van een ameublement uit de voormalige verzamelingen Cronier en Goulden.40De tapisserie van de twee canapés maakt deel uit van het oorspronkelijke ameublement (geveild 1890). Tussen 1894 en 1927 werden de bekledingen op andere houten frames aangebracht.Conditie:De rozenrand aan de achterzijde van de zitting van cat. 21-g, met nog heldere kleuren, heeft een katoenen ketting en is in het midden voorzien van een verticale naad.
